October, first hard frost · the top pool
The extra mile
Walked past three cars in the lay-by and kept going. Found the pool above the falls empty, the way it always is — the extra mile puts most people off, which is the extra mile doing its job. Nothing moved for an hour. Then everything did. Worth the cold hands.
A grey Tuesday · the sea loch
No signal
No phone signal from the moment the track left the road, which is the first good thing that happens out here. Flask of tea on the rock, line in the water, nowhere to be. Caught nothing. Still the best day of the week.
Late August, low water · the hill burn
Small water
Small fish, small flies, and a long way up to reach them. People drive past this burn to get to the famous river. Let them. The ones who stop here learn more in a season than I did in ten years chasing names.
First light, November · the estuary
Dress for it
Beat the tide by half an hour and had the whole flat to myself. Cold enough that the rod rings iced between casts. You dress for it or you go home — that's all the schedule there is out here.
A long June evening · the far bank
After the crowds
Crossed at the shallows while the light held and fished back down in the dark. No rush. The fish come on when the crowds have gone for their dinner, and the far bank is only far to the people who won't get their boots wet.
